Data corruption via reversed character-class mapping
Published Apr 22, 2026 · Updated Apr 22, 2026
Incorrect character-class handling in uutils coreutils before 0.8.0 allows local users to corrupt data through the tr utility. The tr class mapping assigns ASCII space to [:graph:] and omits it from [:print:], reversing POSIX and GNU filtering semantics. Exploitation requires a local invocation or script that relies on those classes; affected filters silently handle spaces incorrectly and can corrupt downstream data.
