Bootloader crash via unchecked ext4 extent count
Published May 11, 2026 · Updated May 11, 2026
Out-of-bounds reads in barebox before 2026.04.0 allow attackers to crash the bootloader through a crafted ext4 filesystem image. The extent walker in fs/ext4/ext4_common.c uses the on-disk eh_entries value as a loop bound without checking the containing buffer's entry capacity. Exploitation requires barebox to mount the crafted image from boot media or a network filesystem, and a resulting fault can halt the boot process.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
