Unauthenticated service crash via inconsistent DTLS fragments

Published May 4, 2026 · Updated Aug 31, 2026

Heap buffer overflow in GnuTLS DTLS reassembly allows remote attackers to crash applications via crafted handshake fragments. The merge_handshake_packet() path groups fragments only by handshake type, allocates from an initial smaller message_length, then copies later fragments with conflicting lengths beyond the heap buffer. The DTLS handshake is reachable without authentication; a small crafted packet sequence deterministically crashes the process, while impact beyond controlled memory corruption is not established.
