Application termination via unchecked path-prefix length
Published Mar 31, 2026 · Updated Mar 31, 2026
Improper index validation in go-git before 5.17.1 allows local users to terminate applications via a crafted format-v4 Git index. The format-v4 decoder applies an unvalidated path-name prefix length to the previously decoded path, causing an out-of-bounds slice and runtime panic. Exploitation requires write access to a repository's .git directory, and process termination occurs when the consuming application does not recover from the panic.
