Service crash via inconsistent cookie reply
Published Apr 22, 2026 · Updated Apr 22, 2026
Null pointer dereference in affected PowerDNS Recursor releases allows remote attackers to crash the DNS service via crafted replies. The outgoing-cookie reply path in lwres.cc omits a consistency check and dereferences a null pointer while processing a malformed DNS response. Exploitation requires outgoing DNS cookies to be enabled, a nondefault setting, and interrupts recursive DNS resolution without system compromise.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=5.2.0 <5.2.9
- Affected versionversion=5.3.0 <5.3.6
