Local code execution via version.dll sideloading
Published Mar 20, 2026 · Updated Mar 20, 2026
DLL sideloading in ScreenToGif 2.42.1 and earlier allows local users to execute code by placing version.dll beside the portable executable. The portable executable searches its application directory before Windows System32 and loads the attacker-controlled version.dll. Exploitation requires the portable copy to reside in a user-writable directory and a user to launch it; code then runs in that user's context.
