File overwrite via unconfined backup archive extraction
Published Aug 25, 2026 · Updated Aug 25, 2026
Path traversal in Velero before 1.18.1 allows remote attackers to overwrite files in the server pod through a malicious backup archive. The restore-time backup extractor joins archive member names containing parent-directory segments to its destination without confining the resolved path. Exploitation requires control of the configured object-storage backend and a restore of the crafted backup, after which files writable by the pod can be replaced.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
