NTLM hash disclosure via network-drive symlink checkout
Published Apr 15, 2026 · Updated Apr 15, 2026
Information disclosure in Git for Windows before 2.53.0.windows.3 allows remote attackers to capture NTLMv2 hashes during checkout. During clone or branch checkout, Git follows a repository-controlled symbolic link to a network drive, causing Windows to authenticate transparently to an attacker-controlled server. Exploitation requires the user to clone the malicious repository or check out its malicious branch; the captured hash can be brute-forced to recover credentials.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
