Remote service crash via unbounded XML nesting

Uncontrolled recursion in Apache Portable Runtime Utility 1.6.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash consumers with crafted XML. The XML parser accepts element nesting without a depth limit, creating a deeply nested tree that apr_xml_quote_elem() traverses recursively until the call stack is exhausted. Exploitation requires a consumer to parse attacker-controlled XML and call apr_xml_quote_elem(); the consumer process terminates, interrupting its service.
