Authentication bypass via remote hostname canonicalization
Published Apr 3, 2026 · Updated Apr 3, 2026
Authentication bypass in util-linux login(1) on Red Hat Hardened Images allows remote attackers to evade host-based PAM access rules. When invoked with -h, login(1) canonicalizes the supplied remote hostname and can shorten it before assigning PAM_RHOST, changing the identity evaluated by PAM. Exploitation requires a remote-login pathway that supplies -h, FQDN-sensitive PAM rules, and a local hostname sharing the supplied hostname's domain suffix.
