CVE-2026-31452

Local kernel crash via oversized ext4 inline file

Published Apr 22, 2026 · Updated Apr 22, 2026

Denial of service in Linux Kernel ext4 allows local users to crash the system by extending an inline-data file and writing to it. ext4_setattr() leaves the inline-data flag set when truncate() grows the inode beyond EXT4_I(inode)->i_inline_size, so ext4_write_inline_data() reaches BUG_ON() when sendfile() supplies a larger write. Exploitation requires local access to an ext4 filesystem containing an inline-data inode and permission to resize and write the file.
