File disclosure and modification via unresolved symlinks
Published Feb 25, 2026 · Updated Feb 25, 2026
Symlink escape in Zed before 0.225.9 allows attackers to read or write files outside a project through Agent file tools. ReadFileTool and EditFileTool validate only worktree-relative logical paths, while Worktree::absolutize concatenates components without resolving symlinks or enforcing the tracked is_external flag. A user must open a project containing an external symlink and invoke the Agent; restricted mode does not stop exposure or modification of files accessible to Zed.
