Subscriber-level Smush administration via unchecked heartbeat commands
Published Apr 10, 2026 · Updated Apr 10, 2026
Incorrect authorization in TeamUpdraft WP-Optimize 4.5.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to invoke admin-only Smush operations. The receive_heartbeat function passes attacker-selected commands directly to Updraft_Smush_Manager_Commands without capability checks, nonces, or the normal AJAX command allowlist. Subscriber-level access is sufficient to read Smush logs, change Smush options, start bulk image processing, or delete all backed-up original images.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
