Memory disclosure or crash via unchecked matrix scan
Published Feb 19, 2026 · Updated Feb 19, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in Open Babel 3.1.1 and earlier allows attackers to expose process memory or crash the application via a crafted CIF file. In transform3d::DescribeAsString, a loop scans a 3×3 transformation-matrix row for a nonzero element without limiting its column index, so an all-zero row reads past the matrix buffer. The file must be opened by the obabel CLI, the OBConversion API, or a language binding; the demonstrated result is an eight-byte heap read and process abort under AddressSanitizer.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
