Root escalation via privileged symlink-following file operations
Published May 13, 2026 · Updated May 13, 2026
Privilege escalation in KDE Plasma Login Manager 6.6.2 allows local users controlling the plasmalogin account to gain root access. The root-running plasmaloginauthhelper fails to drop privileges and follows attacker-controlled symlinks while changing ownership, deleting trees, and writing files. Exploitation requires control of the plasmalogin service account and is not reachable in the default installation.
