CVE-2026-24028Network attack vector

Service crash via Lua DNS overlay over-read

Published Mar 31, 2026 · Updated Mar 31, 2026

Out-of-bounds reads in PowerDNS DNSdist 1.9.0 through 1.9.11 and 2.0.0 through 2.0.2 allow remote attackers to crash the service. The DNS overlay parser performs an invalid substring operation while newDNSPacketOverlay walks a crafted response, reading beyond the packet buffer. Reachability requires custom Lua code to pass attacker-controlled DNS responses to that function; the read can crash the process or expose unrelated memory.
