Kernel memory corruption via erroneous ENODEV return
Published Mar 25, 2026 · Updated Mar 25, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux Kernel 5.18 through 7.0-rc1 allows attackers to corrupt kernel memory during pm8001 device removal. pm8001_queue_command() calls task_done(), freeing the SAS task, but returns -ENODEV; sas_ata_qc_issue() treats the task as unhandled and frees it again. The trigger requires root access to the driver's sysfs delete attribute or physical device removal, so ordinary unprivileged local activity does not reach the faulty path.
