CVE-2026-22184Public exploit

Local memory corruption via unbounded archive-name copy

Published Jan 7, 2026 · Updated Jan 7, 2026

Global buffer overflow in zlib untgz 1.3.1.2 and earlier allows local users to corrupt memory via an overlong archive name. TGZfname() copies argv[] into a 1024-byte static global buffer with strcpy() before validating length or parsing the archive. Exploitation requires a local user to run the standalone demonstration utility; the core compression library is unaffected, and a crash is demonstrated.
