Application crash via unchecked bones_num loop
Published Aug 17, 2026 · Updated Aug 19, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in Open Asset Import Library Assimp 17c12da allows remote attackers to crash applications via a crafted MDL7 file. In AddBonesToNodeGraph_3DGS_MDL7 in code/AssetLib/MDL/MDLLoader.cpp, the parser trusts pcHeader->bones_num from the file as the loop bound for apcBones and advances past the heap-allocated bone-pointer array. Reachability requires an application to open or process attacker-supplied MDL content; public evidence shows a proof-of-concept and crash behavior, but no confirmed code-execution or in-the-wild exploitation.
