Code execution via repository-controlled Git fsmonitor helper
Published Sep 1, 2026 · Updated Sep 2, 2026
Code execution in OpenAI Codex CLI and Codex Desktop allows local users to run code by opening an attacker-prepared Git repository. Git metadata collection honored the repository-local core.fsmonitor value and launched its configured helper outside the Codex sandbox and approval flow. Exploitation requires a repository copied with its .git/config intact; the helper runs with the user's privileges and can read, change, or delete accessible files.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
