Out-of-directory file write via unvalidated category name
Published Aug 9, 2026 · Updated Aug 9, 2026
Path traversal in Pimzino Spec Workflow MCP 2.2.0 through 2.2.6 allows local users to write approval JSON files outside the approvals directory. ApprovalStorage.createApproval joins caller-controlled categoryName beneath .spec-workflow/approvals, then creates the resolved directory and writes an ID-named JSON file without validating containment. Low-privileged local access to the MCP request action is required; writes remain limited by the process account's filesystem permissions and the generated approval filename and content.
