Application crash via mismatched dataset ranks
Published Aug 5, 2026 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Divide-by-zero in The HDF Group HDF5 2.3.0 and earlier allows attackers to crash applications that read a crafted HDF5 file. H5O__layout_decode accepts stored chunk-layout dimensionality that differs from the dataspace rank, causing H5S__hyper_iter_get_seq_list to divide by zero. Processing attacker-supplied HDF5 content is required; the demonstrated path opens and reads the file through H5Dopen2 and H5Dread, including in h5repack.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
