Unauthorized path overwrite via incremental restore race
Published Aug 3, 2026 · Updated Aug 3, 2026
Path traversal in GNU tar incremental restore on Red Hat products allows local users to write outside the intended extraction directory. The dumpdir 'X' rename handler checks and later uses a path across a race window, allowing directory changes to redirect creation, rename, or overwrite operations. Exploitation requires write access to backed-up content and access to the restore host; neither a crafted archive nor absolute-path extraction is required.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
