Limited file writes via character-wise path comparison
Published Feb 2, 2026 · Updated Feb 2, 2026
Path traversal in pip before 26.0 allows attackers to write files outside the installation directory through a crafted wheel archive. The is_within_directory helper in unpacking.py compares absolute paths with os.path.commonprefix, so sibling paths sharing a character prefix pass the containment check. Exploitation requires a user-initiated installation of an attacker-controlled wheel; writes are limited to directory-prefix neighbors and normally cannot replace executable files.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
