SYSTEM code execution via writable service directory
Published Jul 22, 2026 · Updated Jul 22, 2026
Incorrect permissions in Duplicati 2.3.0.1 allow local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM through a writable custom install. The Windows MSI leaves Authenticated Users with inherited Modify rights on non-default installation directories, letting a standard user replace a DLL loaded by the LocalSystem service. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access, a non-default writable installation path, and a service restart; successful abuse grants full SYSTEM execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
