Unauthenticated administrator takeover via unchecked user creation
Published Aug 3, 2026 · Updated Aug 3, 2026
Missing authorization in wp.insider Simple Membership before 4.7.8 allows remote attackers to take over the primary administrator account. The registration path passes a failed create_wp_user result onward as a user ID, so a crafted username collision updates user ID 1 with attacker-controlled profile data. Exploitation requires a single-site installation with public free registration and enables takeover after the administrator email is replaced and password reset is invoked.
