Service interruption via unchecked home-directory chown

Incorrect permission assignment in pam_winbind on affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux releases allows local users to interrupt services. With mkhomedir enabled, the PAM module calls chown on an account's existing home path without rejecting / or another critical system directory. A PAM session for an account mapped to / is required; narrow sudo rights to that account are enough to break SSH, sudo, and package management.
