Author-level site defacement via unchecked template creation
Published Jul 16, 2026 · Updated Jul 16, 2026
Missing authorization in Rometheme RTMKit before 2.0.9 allows remote authenticated users with Author access to replace site-wide templates. The add_themebuilder AJAX handler accepts an Author's valid plugin nonce and creates an active rometheme_template without the administrator-only capability check enforced by the sibling edit handler. Author access to the Elementor editor is sufficient to obtain the nonce and replace headers, footers, single-post layouts, or 404 pages shown to visitors.
