Root command execution via password substitution
Published Jun 7, 2026 · Updated Jun 7, 2026
Command injection in GL.iNet Beryl AX firmware 4.4.0 through 4.4.5 allows remote attackers to execute commands as root via a password. The SET_USER_PWD handler passes the untrusted password through snprintf into a double-quoted printf command and invokes system(), so $() and backticks are expanded by the root shell. The endpoint requires no authentication, but the NAS service and an existing NAS user are prerequisites; GL.iNet reports that equivalent payloads do not execute on 4.8.1.
