Local privilege escalation via reshowable permission overlays
Published Jun 1, 2026 · Updated Jun 1, 2026
Privilege escalation in Google Android 14, 15, 16, and 16-qpr2 allows local users to obtain permissions through an overlay. WindowState applies visibility policy only to the client-accessible ViewRootImpl surface, allowing the client to reshow an overlay above Settings. A local attack needs no existing execution privileges or user interaction and can gain permissions granted through the obscured system UI.
