Local privilege escalation via lingering overlay
Published Jun 1, 2026 · Updated Jun 1, 2026
Tapjacking in Android Framework 14, 15, 16, and 16 QPR2 allows local users to gain privileges through a lingering overlay window. The WindowState.hide path waits for an exiting non-system overlay's prior animation instead of hiding the window immediately. No prior execution privileges or user interaction are required; the retained overlay can cause unauthorized permission approval and local privilege gain.
