Local privilege escalation via nonexistent-file requests
Published Mar 2, 2026 · Updated Mar 2, 2026
Privilege escalation in Google Android 14, 15, 16, and 16-QPR2 allows local users to gain read and write access to nonexistent file paths. MediaProvider.createRequest accepts a URI without a corresponding Files-table row instead of rejecting the request. A local app needs no additional execution privileges or user interaction and can obtain elevated file access through the invalid request.
