CVE-2025-8766

Container root escalation via group-writable passwd file

Published Mar 13, 2026 · Updated Mar 13, 2026

Privilege escalation in Red Hat Multi-Cloud Object Gateway Core images allows local users to gain root access within a container. The setup_platform.sh build script assigns mode 664 across /etc, leaving /etc/passwd group-writable and permitting a root-group process to append an account with UID 0. Exploitation requires command execution as a non-root container user who belongs to the root group; the resulting privilege is confined to the affected container.
