Local objdump crash via malformed ELF string table
Published Jul 27, 2025 · Updated Jul 14, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in GNU Binutils 2.44 BFD Library allows local users to crash objdump by processing a crafted ELF file. bfd_elf_get_str_section writes a terminating null byte into a read-only mapping when a malformed string-table section reaches the read path. Low-privileged local execution is required, and the demonstrated consequence is termination of the processing utility.
