Local system crash via bufferless folio release
Published May 6, 2026 · Updated May 6, 2026
Null pointer dereference in the Linux Kernel allows local users to crash the system during release of a filesystem folio. try_to_free_buffers() passes a folio without private buffer data to drop_buffers() instead of returning before dereferencing the missing buffer state. Reachability requires low-privileged local access and a mapping marked AS_RELEASE_ALWAYS without a release_folio operation; the bounded consequence is system availability loss.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
