CVE-2025-71104

Host hard lockup via stale timer expiration

Published Jan 14, 2026 · Updated Jan 14, 2026

Denial of service in Linux Kernel KVM allows local users to hard-lock an Intel host after a suspended virtual machine resumes. advance_periodic_target_expiration adds one period to an already expired APIC target, producing a negative delta that forces fallback to hrtimers and repeated callbacks with IRQs disabled. The condition requires an Intel host using the VMX preemption timer and a periodic guest APIC timer after prolonged vCPU inactivity; the bounded result is a host hang.
