Readelf crash via stale DWARF parser state
Published Mar 6, 2026 · Updated Mar 6, 2026
Denial of service in GNU Binutils readelf 2.46 and earlier allows local users to crash the utility via a crafted ELF file. The process_debug_info() path leaves an invalid debug_info_p state for DWARF attribute parsing, allowing a zero-length malformed attribute to reach byte_get_little_endian() and trigger SIGABRT. Exploitation requires local processing of the crafted file and interrupts only that readelf process; no memory corruption or code execution was observed.
