Username enumeration via distinct authentication errors
Published Jan 1, 2026 · Updated Jan 1, 2026
Observable response discrepancy in Gitea before 1.25.2 allows remote attackers to enumerate valid usernames through /api/v1/user. The apiAuth handler passed raw authentication errors to APIError, exposing distinct messages for a missing user and a valid user with a wrong password. No account or user interaction is required; repeated Basic authentication attempts disclose account existence but do not grant access.
