Training-task hang via unbounded regex backtracking
Published Sep 23, 2025 · Updated Sep 23, 2025
Regular expression denial of service in Hugging Face Transformers before 4.53.0 allows attackers to hang training tasks via crafted patterns. AdamWeightDecay._do_use_weight_decay passes entries from its include and exclude lists directly to re.search, permitting catastrophic backtracking against parameter names. Reachability requires control of those optimizer pattern lists; exploitation saturates a processor and stalls the affected task without a reported data impact.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
