Service degradation via oversized username-change requests
Published Jan 28, 2026 · Updated Jan 28, 2026
Denial of service in Discourse affected releases allows remote authenticated users to degrade forum performance via oversized JSON requests. The username preference endpoint PUT /u/{username}/preferences/username accepts large JSON bodies without effective resource limits, consuming server capacity during request handling. A valid low-privileged account is required, and successful requests produce noticeable delays and resource exhaustion that degrade other users and endpoints.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
