SYSTEM privilege escalation via log deletion symlink
Published Feb 17, 2026 · Updated Feb 17, 2026
Improper privilege management in Malwarebytes AdwCleaner before 8.7.0 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via a symbolic link. The elevated process deletes a log file at a user-controlled path without constraining the deletion target, allowing a symbolic link to redirect the operation. Exploitation requires a non-administrator to create a file in the expected folder and intercept the application's log-deletion flow.
