Browser script execution via unsanitized equation preview
Published Feb 3, 2026 · Updated Feb 3, 2026
Stored XSS in Moodle LMS's TinyMCE equation editor allows remote authenticated users to run script in another user's browser. The tiny_equation preview path sends arithmetic-expression input to tiny_equation_filter and assigns the returned content to innerHTML without first stripping HTML tags. A user with permission to enter an equation must save crafted content, and another user must view the expression for the script to run in that viewer's session.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=4.1.0 <4.1.22
- Affected versionversion=4.4.0 <4.4.12
- Affected versionversion=4.5.0 <4.5.8
