Local root execution via writable engine lookup
Published Dec 16, 2025 · Updated Dec 16, 2025
Local privilege escalation in FreePBX framework 16 before 16.0.45 and framework 17 before 17.0.24 allows local users to execute code as root. The deprecated amportal script searches /etc/asterisk for freepbx_engine and executes the first matching file with root permissions even when an asterisk-group member created it. Exploitation requires local membership in the asterisk group and execution of amportal, after which the planted file gains unrestricted root-level execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
