Cross-account profile modification via unchecked patient IDs

Published Jan 27, 2026 · Updated Jan 27, 2026

Improper access control in OpenEMR before 7.0.4 allows remote authenticated users to alter other users' profile data. PatientController::Update resolves a request-supplied record ID and writes profile fields without comparing the target patient ID with the session patient ID. Any normal patient-portal account can persistently change another patient's name or contact details; account takeover requires an administrator to commit the portal changes.
