Stored XSS via unescaped word-separator system message
Published Feb 3, 2026 · Updated Feb 3, 2026
Stored XSS in Wikimedia Foundation MediaWiki 1.44 before 1.44.3 and 1.45 before 1.45.1 allows remote authenticated users to run script. ApiSandboxLayout.js inserts the administrator-editable word-separator system message into the Special:ApiSandbox DOM without escaping it as text. High privileges are required to modify the message; script then executes for users who open the API sandbox, exposing data and actions available to their sessions.
