Code execution via noncanonical archive path check
Published Mar 25, 2026 · Updated Mar 25, 2026
Path traversal in Plexus Utils before 3.6.1 and 4.0.0 through 4.0.2 allows attackers to write outside the extraction directory via crafted archives. Expand.extractFile compares absolute-path strings by prefix without canonicalizing the archive entry or requiring a separator-delimited child path. A consuming application must extract a crafted archive; an out-of-tree write under its process permissions enables code execution only when a sensitive executable or configuration path can be replaced.
