Root privilege escalation via path traversal overwrite
Published Dec 11, 2025 · Updated Dec 11, 2025
Path traversal in the cPanel Team Manager API in versions 110 through 132 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files and gain root privileges. The API insufficiently validates a user-supplied path before writing, allowing traversal outside the intended directory and replacement of root-controlled files. A low-privileged cPanel account is sufficient, and the affected API is reachable on a default installation without special server configuration.
