Local root escalation via unchecked TapeDumper paths
Published Mar 3, 2026 · Updated Mar 3, 2026
Privilege escalation in Cohesity TranZman Migration Appliance 4.0 Build 14614 allows local users to gain root access via TapeDumper. The NOPASSWD sudo rule permits an administrator to run TapeDumper as root, while its open and dump commands accept arbitrary file paths as tape devices without validation. Shell access as the appliance administrator is required; attackers can copy and replace privileged files, including /etc/passwd, to create a root account.
