Stored XSS via unescaped system messages
Published Oct 21, 2025 · Updated Oct 21, 2025
Stored XSS in Wikimedia Foundation MediaWiki PageTriage before 1.44 allows remote authenticated users to execute scripts in reviewers' browsers. The showIp.js code passes two unescaped system messages to jQuery append() and replaceWith(), causing their stored HTML to enter the DOM as executable content. An attacker must be able to edit MediaWiki interface messages; execution occurs when a sysop opens New Pages Feed or selects Show IP.
