Stored XSS via raw system-message HTML insertion
Published Oct 18, 2025 · Updated Oct 20, 2025
Stored XSS in Wikimedia Foundation ImageRating before 1.39 allows remote authenticated users to run script in visitors’ browsers. The ImageRating.js handler passes unescaped mw.msg() output for imagerating-category to jQuery .html(), inserting the system message as raw HTML. A registered account with the default rateimage right, VoteNY, a rated local file, and $wgUseXssLanguage enabled are required; a victim must open the crafted special-page request.
